Visakhapatnam: LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) will hold Whitathon, its annual cause-related running event to raise awareness and funds for children with retinoblastoma eye cancer here on May 28. Retinoblastoma eye cancer most commonly affects children below three years of age (90%). About 20 to 25% of cases of eye cancer worldwide in children are from India, and 50% of cases worldwide lose their lives due to late detection and inadequate treatment.
Retinoblastoma is curable if the tumour is detected and treated early, thus saving the life, eye and vision of the child, according to doctors of LVPEI. Gadiraju Keerthi and Gadiraju Ajaykumar Varma, national roller hockey champions, will unveil the T-shirt and medal for the second edition of the Whitathon Run-2023 organised by LVPEI’s GMR Varalakshmi campus in Visakhapatnam.
Like last year, this year too, the Vizag Runners and the Indian Medical Association are supporting the run. Dr. PJ Srinivas, president of IMA, Dr Bappa Rao, ENT specialist at Sagar Durga Hospital, Balkrishna Rai, president of Vizag Runners Society and Dr Bhavik Uttam Panchal, Head of LVPEI campus and Dr. Neha Ghose, ocular oncologist, will participate in the run.
